Rachel of TheTravelBug has extensive knowledge of the rural Bulgarian property market. She personally owns 11 rural houses in central Bulgaria and has helped many others purchase their own idyllic country property in the stunning Bulgarian countryside.

TheTravelBug started life as a simple website to describe Rachel's experience in the Bulgarian property market and show case a few properties she had personally seen that were for sale through a local agent. The business slowly expanded and as Rachel's knowledge and experience increased, the website grew as did the number of properties for sale.

In October 2006 Rachel moved permanently to Bulgaria. For the first year she lived in a part renovated villa and managed to accumulate a collection of rescued dogs and cats, while she had a new 3 bedroom house built on the site of a little old house. She set up her own office and started to build up a network of various contacts in related fields - real estate, holiday accommodation, property management, building trade.

She now works mainly with a couple of local agencies to source rural property for clients as well as receiving offers for sale from individuals directly.

In recent months there has been an increase in the number of clients wishing to relocate to Bulgaria with horses or to start a smallholding there. Most rural properties in Bulgaria come with around 1,000 to 2,000sqm of land and several outbuildings but it can be fairly difficult to source properties akin to smallholdings in the UK with several acres or larger farms. Most large farms in Bulgaria are co-operative owned and not private enterprises.

However, through a few reliable contacts Rachel can source houses with more land, properties with equine facilities, houses suitable as smallholdings or agricultural land.
